OEM Jewelry vs ODM Jewelry: What's the Difference and Which Does Your Brand Need?

OEM jewelry is made to your own design: you supply the drawings or CAD, and the factory produces them. ODM jewelry is designed by the manufacturer's design team, either from your brief or by adapting one of its existing designs, and sold under your brand. Choose OEM if you already have production-ready designs and want full control; choose ODM if you have an idea but no designer.

Suppliers use the two terms loosely. At Deechy Jewelry Manufacturing & Design we offer both: OEM production from your drawings and ODM design by our in-house design studio. Here is how they compare and how to choose.

What OEM Jewelry Means

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. In jewelry, it means the factory builds a piece to your specification. You provide sketches, a CAD file or a full tech pack: dimensions, metal, plating color, stones, finish, clasp and stamp position.

The factory's job is to make it accurately and to flag anything that will not survive production, such as prongs too thin to hold a stone. Good OEM jewelry manufacturers raise these problems before production rather than quietly changing your design.

Some suppliers also call it "OEM" when they just add your logo to a catalog piece. That is closer to private label. Our guide to private label vs white label jewelry explains the difference.

What ODM Jewelry Means

ODM stands for Original Design Manufacturer. Here the factory's designers create the piece. You bring a brief: a mood board, your target customer, price position and preferred stones. The design team turns it into concepts, a CAD model and then a sample.

Many ODM jewelry manufacturers also adapt an existing design, changing the stone, size, plating color or chain.

Settle ownership early. An ODM design is not always exclusive, and the same piece can end up with other buyers, so get the answer in writing.

When to Choose OEM Jewelry and When to Choose ODM

OEM jewelry makes sense when:

  • You already have a designer and a recognizable signature look.
  • New pieces must match an existing collection exactly.
  • You want designs you can move to another factory without starting over.

ODM is the better choice when:

  • You know your customer and price point but do not have a designer.
  • You want a factory's practical knowledge of what casts, sets and plates well.
  • You are launching a small first collection and want fewer revision rounds.

Many brands use both: ODM for the first collection, then OEM once they hire a designer or develop a clear house style.

A 5-Question Checklist Before You Decide

  1. Are your designs production-ready? If you have dimensioned drawings or CAD, start with OEM. If you have mood boards, start with ODM.
  2. Must the design be yours alone? Either model can work, but put ownership and exclusivity in writing before the sample.
  3. How much time do you have? Concept rounds add time; adapting an existing design is usually quickest.
  4. Have you specified the details? Plating thickness in microns, stone grade and stamp position belong in the specification for both models.
  5. Will you reorder? Keep the approved sample as your golden sample. Our guide to sample-to-bulk consistency explains why.

How OEM and ODM Work at Deechy

Both OEM and ODM designs start from 20–30 pieces per style, with a one-time $30 tooling fee per style. CAD takes 3–5 business days and a sample 5–10 business days, so about 10–20 days from brief to sample. The sample fee is credited against your first bulk order of 100 pieces or more. Bulk production usually takes 7–15 days, or about 25 days for orders above 500 pieces, depending on the style, and every piece goes through our 10-step quality control process.

A design we develop for you is not sold to other buyers. If you find a catalog piece you love, you can also buy exclusive rights to it instead of starting from scratch; this comparison sets out the three routes. For the full process, read how to order custom silver jewelry from China.

To start from an existing piece, browse our rings and pendants and charms, for example this butterfly pendant necklace, and tell us what to change. Or send your own drawings for review.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is OEM jewelry?

OEM jewelry is jewelry a factory produces to the buyer's own design, from the buyer's sketches, drawings or CAD files. The buyer controls the design, and the factory is responsible for making it accurately.

What is the difference between OEM and ODM jewelry manufacturers?

OEM jewelry manufacturers make a design you supply. ODM jewelry manufacturers create the design for you with their own design team, working from your brief. With either model, agree in writing who owns the finished design.

Is ODM jewelry exclusive to my brand?

Not automatically. Some factories sell ODM designs to more than one buyer, so ask before you sign off. At Deechy, a design developed for you is not sold to other buyers.

What is the minimum order for custom OEM or ODM jewelry at Deechy?

Custom OEM and ODM designs at Deechy start from 20–30 pieces per style, with a one-time $30 tooling fee per style.

How long does it take to get an OEM or ODM jewelry sample?

At Deechy, CAD takes 3–5 business days and the sample 5–10 business days, so about 10–20 days from brief to sample, plus shipping. Bulk production usually takes 7–15 days.
